In the world of sports, glory often wears a jersey and stands on a podium. But in the background, behind every medal, is a mentor—often unseen, often unheard—who gives everything to craft greatness out of raw potential. One such unsung hero of Indian athletics is Dr. C. Ajithkumar, a man whose mission isn’t medals—but legacies.

From the tranquil village of Palakkulam in Kerala’s Kottayam district, Ajithkumar’s journey began in 1972 as the seventh child of two teachers. Raised with eight siblings in a modest home filled with discipline, values, and dreams, he learned early that success isn’t handed—it’s earned.

An Athlete First, a Coach Forever

A sprinter in his youth, Dr. Ajithkumar’s speed was undeniable—10.76 seconds in 100m, 21.87 in 200m—representing MG University and Kerala State with pride. But more than his records, it was his attitude that stood out. In 1991, he was honored with the Best Sportsmanship Award—a foreshadowing of the leader he would become.

His service with the Indian Navy further molded his character. There, he not only earned a silver medal in his debut Services Meet but also cemented his resolve to nurture the next generation of athletes.

The Award He Deserves, But Never Asked For

In an era when many chase titles and trophies, Dr. Ajithkumar remains humble—his walls decorated not with personal awards, but with his students’ victories. Though his name has been long overdue for honors like the Dronacharya Award, he speaks of it only when prompted.

“I don’t coach for recognition. I coach for transformation,” he says. “When an athlete breaks a barrier—physical or mental—that’s my real reward.”
