Pahalgam

New Delhi | April 24, 2025 — In the wake of the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 26 innocent tourists and injured over 20 more, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has issued a strong resolution condemning the act, mourning the loss, and demanding swift action on multiple fronts — from justice for victims to a nationwide call for unity.

The CWC described the April 22nd attack as a “cowardly and calculated assault,” allegedly masterminded by Pakistan, and noted that the deliberate targeting of Hindus was meant to provoke communal unrest. “It was not only an attack on individuals but on the very ethos of the Republic of India,” the resolution stated.

A Call for Calm and Collective Strength

While the tragedy has deeply shaken the nation, the Congress party is appealing for calm and resilience in the face of provocation. “Terrorism seeks to divide us, but our strength lies in unity,” the resolution reads, reaffirming the party’s commitment to fighting terrorism with resolve, responsibility, and unity.

Advocate Arsalan Khalid Demands State Aid for Bengal Victims

Congress leader and senior advocate Arsalan Khalid has specifically raised concern for the three victims from West Bengal who lost their lives in the massacre. He has urged the state government to step forward and provide comprehensive support to the bereaved families, including:

  • A government job for a dependent family member of each victim.

  • Immediate financial compensation to support the grieving families.

  • Free education and medical care for children of the deceased.

  • A structured long-term support plan to ensure these families are not left behind.

“These families have suffered irreparable loss. It is our duty, not charity, to stand by them,” Advocate Khalid said.

Tribute to Unsung Heroes

The CWC also paid homage to the selfless courage of local ponywalas and tourist guides — one of whom sacrificed his life while trying to protect tourists during the attack. Their bravery has become a beacon of hope and unity in these dark times. “Their courage reminds us of the India we all believe in — united, compassionate, and resilient,” said the Congress leadership.

Demand for Answers: Security and Intelligence Lapses Must Be Investigated

Given that Pahalgam falls under a three-tier security protocol in a Union Territory governed by the central administration, the CWC has called for an immediate investigation into the apparent security and intelligence failures. “These are hard questions, but in the interest of transparency and justice, they must be answered,” the resolution emphasized.

The party has also welcomed the decision to call for an all-party meeting chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, first proposed by the Congress itself on the night of the attack. It views this meeting as a crucial step toward national solidarity and decisive policy response.

Security of Amarnath Yatra Must Be Top Priority

With the annual Amarnath Yatra approaching, the Congress stressed the urgent need for robust security measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims and protect the tourism-driven economy of the region. “The lives of pilgrims and livelihoods of locals must be safeguarded with utmost sincerity,” the CWC said.

Criticism of BJP’s Divisive Narrative

The CWC also expressed disappointment at what it described as the BJP’s use of the tragedy to fuel division via official and unofficial digital platforms. “In a moment when the country needs unity, the ruling party is indulging in polarization,” the resolution stated. “This is not leadership. This is opportunism.”

Conclusion

The Congress Party’s resolution following the Pahalgam attack is a call for national solidarity, justice, and compassion. As the country mourns, the need for responsible leadership, inclusive support, and transparent governance is more urgent than ever.
